Project Kali - Modeling

Now let's get to one of my favourite parts of working on Kali: Modeling!
I've done all the environment modeling you can see in the game except for plants and shrines.

As a very first step, I created walls. These can be tiled with each other as they connect seamlessly. The standard walls are the medium-sized ones, higher walls are used to block vision when the player is on top stairs etc., lower walls are used to give areas a more open feel or and obstacles to jump over in order to provide players with more options in combat.
(Kali for size comparison)

I also created pillars for the level, these are the ones that made it into the game:

When I made these I did a lot of research on (mostly southern) Indian architecture in order to create a style that seemed "believable-Indian". During that process, I found a pillar similar to the one in the center of the image above but I found it hard to make it work in-game. What I really liked about this one was the "open" feel it had when it was placed into the level because it wouldn't block all vision. But that was also one of the main problems I had with it. The number of smaller pillars surrounding the main pillar couldn't be too high or else it would seem too cluttered and would distract players' attention. If I lowered the pillar count it would lose a lot of the Indian theme. Here are some of the versions I tried before settling for the one in the picture above:

One of the last things I modeled was a small temple-like building to accommodate our bigger shrine and make it appear less "lonely" when placed in levels. Unfortunately, it has not yet been textured and is not in the game yet but that is going to change!

There is on more model I worked on - the Gopuram, a special gateway building used southern Indian Hindu temples. This one is a bit special (and also not quite done yet) so I'm going to dedicate a new post to it.
